Kaifangs - London, UK

A space shaped by the warmth of a family embrace.

Inspired by the idea of a family hug, Kaifangs translates the warmth of togetherness into a spatial experience. Curving forms, enveloping materials and subtle cultural references create a restaurant designed around comfort, connection and a sense of belonging.

The concept of Kaifangs begins with its guests. With families at the heart of the restaurant, the design explores how a space can evoke the feeling of an embrace.

Timber surfaces extend from walls onto ceilings, wrapping the interior in a continuous gesture. Curved banquettes create intimate seating areas, while generously proportioned chairs offer a similar sense of enclosure and comfort. Each element contributes to an environment that feels welcoming and connected.

Chinese cultural references are introduced with restraint rather than through overt decoration. Traditional Chinese knots are subtly integrated into ropes concealed between timber slats, revealing moments of cultural identity through the architectural detailing.

The result is a contemporary interpretation of a Chinese family restaurant, where the feeling of being embraced becomes part of the architecture itself.
